Haluka Maier-Borst
Data journalist · messy sketcher · old school machine learner
Hi, I'm Haluka. I am a data journalist. I work for the news website Handelsblatt in a team of developers, designers and other journalists. Sometimes I even get to lead it. Oh, and I only have a slight clue about AI and that's why we are here.
Although I did my Master's thesis on machine learning umteen years ago, I cannot claim that I have thirty-odd prompts that define my work flow. But I also don't want to be the kind of Otto* that keeps saying: "Well, nobody can create such artistic excel tables like myself."
So, I want to write here about the amateurish ways that I try out prompting, AI and all of these other buzzing sounding things. And more importantly how it went.
I will write about what went well and what you can copy. But even more importantly, I want to write about what went wrong, so that I can learn from others how to do this whole thing better.
I created this "tiny experiment", inspired by Anne-Laure Le Cunff. She explains in her book how public learning helped her to get her head around completely new things. And so I want to try this as well. Maybe this space ends up as a digital graveyard just like my science journalist webpage. Or maybe it becomes a starting place for us (data) journalists to learn and think together about how AI can help us in our job. But most importantly, this should be a buzzword-reduced zone.
What you'll find here
- Data Journalism — me experimenting with different prompting techniques and tools for my job specifcally as a data journalist and data journalism teacher.
- Office — me trying to navigate more efficiently through office life as a team lead and employee thanks to AI.
- Free Time — things completely detached from my work where I have tried out AI "stuff" just for myself.
